Description James Kennedy, Jr. This is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Kennedy Sr. His mother, nee Caroline Stone, was the first white woman in New Westminster. His father was an architect who built many of the city's first buildings, see Howay and Scholefield R971.1 B777 "British Columbia: From the earliest times to the present - Biographical v.3," p.551. Their son, James Jr., along with his brothers George and Robert founded the printing and publishing firm of the Kennedy Bros. In 1888, the firm bought the Columbian newspaper from the Hon. John Robson, premier of B.C. They published it for 12 years. The brothers landed in jail for defying a summons to appear before the House. They were more fiercely critical than usual over something the government had done and thus were summoned. This happened during the 1891-92 session of the provincial government. THere are some who claim that James Kennedy Jr. was the first white baby born in New Westminster see "New Westminster Today" Wednesday, September 29, 1983 p. c7 The original photo had the caption "Thompson & Bovill, New Westminster, B.C." In the book "Camera Workers" by David Mattison R770.92 M435c on p. T-5 he lists the photographers as active between 1885?-1889.
