Description The library building which had been built in 1892 was destroyed by the great fire of 1898. Temporary library quarters were needed. On April 24, 1899, it was announced a Reading room would be set up in one half of a temporary store building "on the site of the old drill shed, occupied since the fire by J.E. Philips and the William Johnston shoe store." The other half of the building, which was located on McKenzie Street, just below Carnarvon Street (later to be the site of the Fisheries and Indian Affairs building) was occupied by the Fire Department - an arrangement which was to last for three years.
