Buchanan Lodge
407 Blair Ave.
The Buchanan Lodge is a two-storey building divided into four residential building forms. Each "house" consists of a shared kitchen, dining area, and a central lounge with a large fireplace and hearth. With their small familiar social environments these "houses" create an atmosphere of intimacy and domesticity within this multi-level facility that provides care for 110 elderly residents. The building was built to replace the old Buchanan Lodge that had opened in August 1946, and was bequeathed to the Salvation Army for use as a hospice in 1949. The old house had been extended and was aging. In their design Neale Staniszkis Doll Adams Architects used wood-frame construction, cedar clapboard siding, and trim boards. The architects reinterpreted some of the architectural features of the old building including wrap-around porches and gabled roofs. Winner of a 1998 Wood Design Award, as well as a 1999 Architectural Institute of B.C. (AIBC) Merit Award, the facility was built by Mierau Construction and the engineering firm was Glotman Simpson.
