9 Columbia Street East
Woodlands Carpentry Shop (between 1910 & 1922)
Designated Date: 2004 January 19

The shop was one of three small wood frame buildings constructed on the north edge of the site west of the greenhouse. It is a utilitarian but attractive gable-roofed structure. Stables in the basement of the building once housed horses that were essential to working the extensive agricultural land operated by the institution. These stables later served as a fire hall for the Provincial Hospital for the Insane as well as the B.C. Penitentiary next door.
