9 Columbia Street East
Woodlands Boiler House (1931)
Designated Date: 2004 January 19

The Boiler House has a clean functionalist character displayed in its Art Deco style of architecture. The facade features cast in place concrete detailing with gothic-inspired quatrefoil inset panels in the center window bay. Striking fenestration patterns of high vertical punched openings with steel frame windows and a corresponding set of shorter clearstory windows on the main block distinguish the building. Additions were made in 1951 and 1960, with the latter not compatible with the rest of the building. The development of this central boiler plant to provide steam to all of the buildings on the Woodlands site was a significant technological advance, providing a reliable source of heat and consolidating the operational labour in the provision of building heat.
