Study Guide "Industry
and the Environment This 60 minute curriculum
specific program is suitable for Grades 2-5 students and beginner to advanced
ESL students.
Combine history, technology and the environment with individual observation skills. Students experience first hand the mechanics of how Samson V, an historic steam-powered vessel is propelled. In the engine room, students will role-play the different machine parts to create their own human model of a moving vessel, using motion, sound, imagination, and teamwork. On the galley level, hands-on activities include working a mini-model of Samson's winch system and activities that enable students to understand the concept of dredging and debris management on the Fraser River. Students will observe their surroundings from the deck and use tactile maps to create an image collage featuring communities on the Fraser, then and now. Participants will identify the common ships of Fraser Port and identify local landmarks while learning about the industries they represent and how they co-exist with the environment. They will see how debris was managed in the past and how it is currently handled. Finally, everyone heads up to the wheelhouse where students can see how messages were sent via the telegraph and have their photos taken in costume at the helm. |
