Information: Three of J.B. Wilson's children on the lawn of his home "Melrose". J.B. Wilson had the "Melrose" built as his private family residence in 1911. The "Melrose" was named after a sister of the donor. The "Melrose" was on 6th Avenue between 16th St. and 18th St. at 1621-6th Avenue. Left to right: unidentified woman, daughter: Violet Ridge, daughter: Ann Sharp, son: J.Boyd Wilson.

Melrose eventually became a private hospital. It first appears in the B.C. Directory as a hospital in 1942. The 1942 listing reads, " Melrose Park Private Hospital Mrs. N.F. Boyd, 1621-6th Avenue." The last B.C. Directory entry for Melrose Hospital is in 1977. An article appeared in the "Columbian" newspaper on October 7, 1975 that stated that the health department had ordered the facility closed by September 30, 1975. The order was rescinded when it was found that the remaining patients could not be transferred to other units. Conditions at the hospital were reported by a local health official to be not up to standard. However, it was felt that the hospital could be maintained until Queens Park extended care unit was completed in about 30 months.

Houses - Streets - Numerical - 8th-12th

#2649

Date: c. 1943

Photographer:

Information: The Galbraith House at 131-8th Street. The house was built by Hugh Galbraith in 1894. Galbraith was born in Scotland, lived in New Brunswick, and eventually came to New Westminster in1884. In 1891 he was operating the family sash and door business on Tenth Street. 3 of 7 sons were in this business. He also had 2 daughters. The house has a basic design similar to patterns published by the architectural firms of William T. Comstock, and Henry Holly of New York. The house is a unique example of his stick style. In later years the house was altered considerably: the verandah was enclosed, and a dormer window added to the roof. The Galbraith family lived in the house until 1940. Galbraith's niece and nephew lost the house to the city because of unpaid taxes. The city allowed the Soroptomist Club of New Westminster to use the house and the group transformed the home into Westminster House. Westminster House was used as a hostel and gathering point for service men and women. There was a canteen, card room, pool table and sleeping rooms. The convener was Dorathea McBride. The donor of the photograph was a volunteer.
