Information:
The William Collister house built in 1911 is being towed up a
hill from Columbia Street. This home was moved from its Albert
Crescent location to Queen's Avenue. The move was done to preserve
it since development in its old location would have forced its
demolition. Note the crane on the power pole - the move of 3 houses
in total involved considerable manpower since trees had to be
trimmed and power lines removed as the houses passed through the
city streets. This photo originally done in color was an entrant
in the New Westminster Public Library's photo contest titles,
"Where Were You When the Houses Were Moved?" The contest ran from
July 3 to August 1, 1990. This photo won 1st prize because of
its wonderful sense of contrast between old and new - note the
Skytrain and high-rise in the background.

Crews clearing the path for the Hoy house as it moves up the street.
This is one of 3 houses that were moved to new locations in order
to save them from demolition. As see in this photo the process
involved considerable manpower since trees had to be trimmed and
power lines removed as the houses passed through city streets.
The Hoy house was at 57 Elliot Street and relocated to 2nd Street
at 3rd Avenue. It was built c. 1908 by contractor Henry Hoy in
the classic box style. Hoy was Mayor of New Westminster in 1894.
This photo originally done in color was an entrant in the New
Westminster Public Library's photo contest titles, "Where Were
You When the Houses Were Moved?" The contest ran from July 3 to
August 1, 1990, and the photo received an honourable mention for
its artistic impression. Donor and photographer's note: "Bring
on the tree trimmer…corner Queen's Ave. heading up 2nd St." You
can see the cut branches and tree trimmer on the boulevard.

Information:
The Captain Wilfred H. Philpott house being moved by truck. The
house is going up 6th Street near the Royal Towers Hotel. In later
May of 1990, the Philpott house was moved from its location at
433 Carnarvon to 119 St. Patricks. It was one of 3 houses moved
in order to preserve them. They would have been demolished due
to high rise development in their old location. The moves involved
considerable manpower since trees had to be trimmed and power
lines removed as the houses passed through the city streets. The
Philpott house was built c. 1905 and was known as Westham. The
style is Eastern shingle and is neo-Classical Revival. This photo
was originally colour and an entry in the library's photo contest,
"Where were you When the House Moved?" which ran from July 3 to
August 1, 1990. It received an honorable mention.
