Information:
The McQuarrie and Mitchell Hat Shop on Columbia Street. At left
is the donor's mother nee Katie Campbell later Smith. At right,
is a French woman whose first name was Claire. Both these women
were employed at the hat shop. Katie Campbell came to Canada at
the age of 16 in 1907. She worked in the hat shop from 1913 until
her marriage in 1918. Her wages started at $6 per week and were
later raised to $10 per week. Hats for the May Queens were made
at the shop. Miss Campbell wrote down in a notebook dated 1913
the cost for some hats as $1.50, $1.10, and 70 cents. Pins were
50 cents.
By
1914, this shop is listed in the B.C. Directories as McQuarrie
(Flora) and Mitchell (Bessie) Milliners 1, 623 Columbia. The same
directory lists T. H Smith Dry Goods & Ladies ready-to-wear at
623 - 627 Columbia Street. McQuarrie and Mitchell must have subsequently
moved location judging from the reflections in their windows,
which show the signs for the businesses across the street from
them. In the left-hand window there is a reflection of the sign
for T.H. Smith Company Ltd. In the right-hand window there is
a reflection of the sign for the Public Supply Store.
