Information:
Group of women volunteers and two soldiers on the steps of Westminster
House. Front row - left to right: Hilda Smith, ______, Doris Mawhinney
and Jean Fulton. Back row - left to right: Amy Hutcheson, ____,
Isabelle Harbard, ____, and Helen McIntosh. Westminster House
was formerly the Galbraith house and was located at 131-8th Street.
Hugh Galbraith built the house in 1894. Galbraith along with three
of his sons were in the sash and door business. The Galbraith
family lived in the house until 1940. Galbraith's niece and husband
lost the house to the city because of unpaid taxes. The city allowed
the Soroptomist Club of New Westminster to use the house and the
group transformed the home into Westminster House. Westminster
House was used as a hostel and gathering point for service men
and women. There was a canteen, card room, pool table, and sleeping
rooms. The donor of the photograph is in the picture.
