The following information was supplied by Archie Purgavie, a Corporal
with the New Westminster Police Department: Top row, far left:
Wellington Miller. Miller joined the force in about 1892. He made
$780.00 per year. By February 13, 1896, Miller was a Constable
making $60.00 per month. In 1903-1905, he was a Police Chief.
Top row, third from left: Matthew Sylvestre Dillabough. He was
identified by his granddaughter living in Vancouver. Matthew joined
the force in 1892 and resigned in 1901. Corporal Purgavie has
more information about him. The members of the police force in
1892 were: Mayor W.B. Townsend (probably far left, front row)
Chief Wm. Huston (second from right, front row) Sergeant John
Carty (far right, front row) Constables - Thomas Dominay John
Douglas Matthew Dillabough _____ Harper Wellington Miller 1892
was the only year the police had 9 members before 1910. None of
these people were still members by 1910 according to police records.
Corporal Purgavie has another picture of Dillabough without the
hat probably taken the same day as the Department photo.
