Information:
Alexandria Sabina (Lexy) Ewen. She was the last of three daughters
born to Alexander Ewen and Mary Rogers Ewen. There was Adelaide
born in 1877, and Isabella born in 1879, and Alexandria born in
1887. Alex Ewen was born in 1832. He was a prominent figure in
Queensborough due to establishing his cannery on Lion Island.
He also possessed 640 acres of choice agricultural land near his
cannery. See R920.071 R463B Ref.Off. "Biographical Dictionary
of Well-Known British Columbians" by J.B. Kerr pp. 162 -164, and
R971.133 p967 "Queensborough" by Hellen Pullem, pp.50 - 51. The
donor of the photo - Isabel Macmillan Latta was the daughter of
Isabella Ewen (later Macmillan). Latta noted that Ewen's old cannery
was at the site of the C.P.R. station on Columbia Street. As the
city expanded there were objections to the smell of the salmon
cannery. Ewen moved his operations to Lion Island. In exchange
for building a road to his cannery (Ewen Avenue) he was given
substantial land holdings in Queensborough.
