Portrait of Isabel Macmillan Latta, who also donated this photograph.
She is the daughter of Isabella Ewen Macmillan, who was a daughter
of Alexander and Mary Rogers Ewen. Alex and Mary Ewen had three
daughters: Adelaide (Addy) born in 1877, Isabella born in 1879,
and Alexandria (Lexy) born in 1887. The donor of the photo is
the daughter of Isabella and according to her, Ewen's old cannery
was at the site of the C.P.R. station on Columbia Street. As the
city expanded there were objections to the smell of the salmon
cannery. Ewen moved his operations to Lion Island. In exchange
for building a road to his cannery (Ewen Avenue) he was given
substantial land holdings in Queensborough. According to the photo's
donor, her hat was made of pique with a button brim. The brim
could be detached for cleaning.
