Date:
c.1890
Source: Isabel Macmillan Latta, donor
Photographer: Thompson & Bovill, photographers, New Westminster,
B.C.
Information: The Ewan Sisters. Left to right: Isabella
Ewan, Alexandria (Lexy) Ewen, and Adelaide Ewen. Adelaide was
born in 1877, Isabella was born in 1879, and Lexy in 1887. The
donor of the photo - Isabel Macmillan Latta was the daughter of
Isabella Ewen (later Macmillan).
The Ewen sisters were the daughters of Alexander Ewen and his
wife Mary Rogers Ewen. Alex Ewen was born in 1832. He was a prominent
figure in Queensborough due to establishing his cannery on Lion
Island. He also possessed 640 acres of choice agricultural land
near his cannery.
See R920.071 R463B Ref.Off. "Biographical Dictionary of Well-Known
British Columbians" by J.B. Kerr pp. 162 -164, and R971.133 p967
"Queensborough" by Hellen Pullem, pp.50 - 51.
The donor of the photo noted that Ewen's old cannery was at the
site of the C.P.R. station on Columbia Street. As the city expanded
there were objections to the smell of the salmon cannery. Ewen
moved his operations to Lion Island. In exchange for building
a road to his cannery (Ewen Avenue) he was given substantial land
holdings in Queensborough. Alexandria was the Maid-of-Honour for
Aldyen Irene Hendry when she was May Queen in 1901. Aldyen later
married Eric Hamber. She was a friend of Alexandria.
